Behind the Badge: Crafting a Law-Enforcement Memorial
A look at how a single piece of wood becomes a lasting tribute — from laying out the design to the final pass of the laser on a badge display board.

Some projects carry more weight than others. When a department or a family asks for a memorial or retirement piece, the goal isn't just a clean engraving — it's a tribute that does justice to a career of service.
Before any material goes on the bed, we talk through what the piece needs to say: names, dates, unit numbers, a badge, the details that make it personal. Getting the layout right on screen is half the craft — spacing, balance, and making sure the most important elements draw the eye.
For display boards we lean toward hardwoods that hold fine detail and take a deep, contrasty burn. The grain becomes part of the design, so each board is genuinely one of a kind.
The laser runs slow and deliberate on a piece like this. When it lifts, the badge, the lettering, and the seal are etched permanently into the wood — ready to hang on a wall for decades.
This is the kind of work that reminds me why I started 10 TwentyEight Designs.
